Chapter 18

By the time Beth made it back to her and Nikki’s place, Jonathan was already enjoying a bottle of local craft beer on the couch with his feet resting on their coffee table. She gave a yipping Bentley some scratches between his ears as she came through the door then urged him forward so she could get inside.

Jonathan swallowed a healthy gulp and adjusted the back of his ever-present knit cap. “Beth, hi!” he said after finishing the bottle.

“Hi yourself. I see you’re nice and comfy.”

“Oh, sorry.” He gave a sheepish grin and brought his feet back to the floor.

Past him, Nikki emerged from the kitchen with a giant bowl of popcorn and widened her eyes at Beth, chiding her for her rudeness. Sighing, Beth pulled her bag’s strap over her head to place it on the table.

“Just a long day at work, Jonathan. You’re fine.” She adjusted the front flap so the contents, including her newly acquired karambit and some items she’d purchased to make good on her promise to shop for supplies exclusively at Reggie’s botánica, stayed hidden from view. Nikki stretched to offer her the popcorn and she took a handful. Jonathan quickly stood to clear a space for the bowl and Nikki set it down.

“Aw… Thanks, J.” Brushing hair from her cheek, Nik gave him a warm smile.

“So,” Beth said, dropping onto the other side of the couch, “what are we watching?”
